President Elect

Hello! My name is Barbie Patterson. I am president elect for the downtown Green Bay Rotary Club of 6220. Are you as the PE ready for your term starting in July? I am getting there. I am adjusting to juggling Rotary and my full time job responsibilities. I attended the PETS conference a few weeks ago in Appleton Wisconsin at the Radisson Paper Valley. It was so awesome! I was not worthy of all the great Rotarians in attendance. I hope I can make a difference as they all did and still do each day. Our club is getting ready to the host the Rotary District Conference May 15, 16 and 17 in Green Bay at the Radisson Airport. We are definitely busting a move as a club!

E-Clubs increase attendance & membership

E-Clubs are becoming more and more popular — especially to help attract members under the age of 40 because they provide flexibility to membership. While we want all members to still attend actual meetings to encourage fellowship, E-Clubs are helpful to those with busy travel schedules or having busy times of year (i.e. accountants, attorneys, physicians, etc.). Should our Club be promoting E-Clubs more to our members to help increase attendance AND attract more members? Fundraising Events for Polio

With the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s recent announcement to donate an additional $255 million to RI’s efforts to eradicate (in addition to the initial $100 million), many Rotary Clubs are doing more and more to help match these grants with local/club fundraising efforts. The Rotary Club of Green Bay is holding an event on Wed., March 4 to help, including a show by Let Me Be Frank Productions and a silent auction (email joycemccollum@sbcglobal.net for tickets). Is this a worthwhile event or are the better/different options to raise dollars for polio?

Engaging New Members

As we gain new members into our Club, we often notice they may not be sure where to sit and/or only sit by themselves. In addition to our Mentor Program, what can we do to help new members get to know other club members?

Rotarians Meet Taliban Supporter in Afghanistan

As part of a National Immunization Day in Afghanistan, Rotarians met and listened to a powerful Taliban mullah, Imam Abdul Wakil, who talked very passionately about the importance of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate Polio. Stephen Brown, past governor of District 5340 (California, USA), said about Abdul Wakil: ”He was clearly very well spoken, and everyone was on the edge of their seats listening to him. There were about 40 mullahs present, about 30 elders, about 10 students from the Taliban madras [Islamic] school, and local and national media.” Should Rotary be involved with the Taliban — even in an effort to eradicate Polio?

Making a Difference with Poverty

As many are unhappy with the shrinking values of their stock portfolios, what about those who cannot even consider investing? According to the World Bank, 20+% of the world’s population lives in poverty.

Research suggests one of the top two factors that bring people out of poverty is education. Rotarians around the world provide scholarships, build/refurbish classrooms, set up computers, etc. so kids can attend school with confidence.

When people serve others, they connect, give of their talents and experience fulfillment. So, for those who are worried about the economy, Rotary provides a way to serve. Service to others is a powerful way to combat depression.

What can be done to make it easy for people to contribute their time and talent; as well as helping others understand and feel the impact of Rotary — whether they are donating time, money or energy –knowing their contributions are worth more than ever?

The Rotary Foundation of Green Bay Inc. provided $4,450 to 5 local organizations during the first quarter of the 2008-09 year. Recipients and contributions included:

o Green Bay Professional Firefighters Memorial: $250

o Project Vote: $300

o Bellin College of Nursing: $2,150

o YMCA: $750

o One Book/One Community: $1,000
